Our Story

About The Society

In spring 2018, a group of community members came together to discuss the importance of collecting, preserving, and sharing the history, stories, genealogies, and other records of Fairchild's past, before it slips away.

As a result, the Fairchild Area Historical Society (FAHS) was incorporated in September 2018 and has been accepted by the Wisconsin Historical Society as a local affiliate.   FAHS has also obtained 501(c)3 tax-exempt status as a nonprofit organization.

FAHS has already been busy sharing local history through a newsletter and a display at community events.  The Society has also begun to accept donations of items of local historical significance.

In 2020, FAHS acquired two buildings in downtown Fairchild for the creation of a research/history center and museum.  The History Center opened in 2024 and museum renovations are continuing.  Additional FAHS plans include inventorying community landmarks, conducting history tours, and collecting oral histories.   Join us in preserving and celebrating our area's rich history.

Fostering Community Through History

The Fairchild area has a very rich history that is worth preserving and sharing with others. It is part of our community identity. Many of the great things about Fairchild today are connected to our history, such as our outstanding recreational trails, Fairchild Pond, and our local wood-product businesses.

Our shared history also shows that Fairchild is a resilient community, and we can work hard to bounce back from hard times. Many area residents may not know that much of the village area burned to the ground in the 1895 Big Fire, but the community came back and rebuilt.

Fairchild's history is not just places and buildings...foremost, it is about people. It is who we are and how we got here. Our history is reflected in what we do today and is a source of pride and inspiration. It is also how we work together to preserve and share our history with future generations.
